OPEN LETTER
February 2009

Valentines Day and More We are now in the second month of the new year February 2009 a year in which there will be many problems worldwide because of injustice and the recession, I do not intend to write in this open letter any of the difficulties we all already know about except to say that if things are to improve we must work together in harmony to face and overcome them. We all want justice to prevail in our own situation and for everyone worldwide. It may seem impossible as an individual that we cannot alone change the world and bring peace and justice we can though persevere to do our best for ourselves without forgetting everyone else. Our thoughts are powerful and they precede our actions. Give thought in prayer and light not only for ourselves and those closest to us but for our earth, everyone and everything living on our planet, only by doing this will a change take place. We are all responsible and each individual can and will make a difference if we remember to do so.

Last year 2008 I wrote some interesting information about St Valentine’s day February 14th which you may find interesting to read again in my open letter in Archives on my article page. This year it would be a good idea to be kind to ourselves and find ways to improve our daily life, and also think of things to do to enjoy it. Many people are finding that letting a room in their house is helping financially, I have done this myself and found it very rewarding as I made friends with interesting people. Nurses are always pleased to find good accommodation and your local health and social services may inform you of the best agencies and means of advertising. There are also students and professional people who require accommodation while on training courses away from home, if you decide to provide meals you do not always have to rely on a microwave for efficiency low cost and nutritious meals, I found investing in a pressure cooker a good idea too. Cutting costs and going out for entertainment need not be a problem as you can entertain and provide interests at home, people in poorer countries than the UK do so all the time,. Start a discussion group in your own home to discuss your favourite interests and pastimes, such as a book club, a creative craft, art work, or hobby you can share together, and perhaps people can donate a few refreshments themselves, no need to sit at a PC all the time is there.

The month of February may look cold and bleak but we have the first spring flowers to look forward to such as the snowdrops, crocuses, and daffodils, and there are several jobs to do in the garden towards the end of the month, getting outdoors is always healthy and refreshing. February has always been celebrated as the month of cleansing, Febru meaning to purify and named after the God Februus. February is a very interesting and important month to both Christians and Pagans. Candlemas is celebrated on the 2nd of February and is a time when all the church candles are blessed; you will find both of these links very informative
www.bbc.co.uk/religion/religions/christianity/holydays/candlemas.shtml   www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/year/february.htm

Towards the end of the month it was always a tradition to do spring cleaning and putting the house in order which seems appropriate at this time of year, rather than looking at it as chore if family and friends get together it can be a pleasure and can be done in a much shorter time if everyone joins in and makes a pleasure out of it by putting on music while you work, each bringing refreshments and joining in together.

February is also a very important time for Pagans who during the first days of the month celebrate Imbolc, a time of cleansing and looking forward to and celebrating the coming of spring, this is an interesting link with information. paganismwicca.suite101.com/article.cfm/creating_pagan_traditions_for_candlemas

The Chinese new year 1st of February 2009 is the year of the Ox and is always a great celebration in London and elsewhere www.chinatownchinese.co.uk/

An interesting festival from the 18th to the 22nd of February which was established in 1985 in York UK is the Jorvik festival when hundreds of Vikings descend on the city, so if you are visiting, take a look www.yorkfestivals.com/metadot/index.pl?iid=3345

Remember it is Pancake Day is on Shrove Tuesday February 24th the last day before Lent, and you may find pancake races being held in your area

OPEN LETTER
January 2009

A New Year 2009

First of all I would like to wish everyone a blessed and happy new year. Because of the world recession there are lots of people who may hesitate and think this may not be a good year and are not looking forward to it, I would like to say however that what ever circumstances maybe where ever we are in the world ultimately we can not only make the best of whatever is we can make it special and choose to make it happy. We can always find someone worse off than ourselves and by thinking of them and doing our best to be helpful to each other what seems to be our own problems do resolve, possibly not immediately but for sure in time for what we give is returned to us. There is always a choice to allow difficult times to separate us or bring us together.

The news is not always bleak as some good news in the media gave an example of recently when the people of the village of Croscombe UK got together and found a solution to avoid the only local shop for miles being closed, by hard work and good management they found the solution was to band together and buy it themselves preventing it from closure and even providing work, and all agreed the whole process brought everyone closer together than they had ever been. This spirit of the community is being shown in other places too such as Penhow near Caldicot, also other villages where shops, post offices, and local pubs are being saved by the people. Anyone who remembers going through World War Two knows how different people were then when everyone had to look out for each other, we may well find that the recession makes us better people and that we all learn not to make the same mistakes. Christmas festivities now being over we cannot forget the goodwill and blessings we wished and prayed for each other which must be carried on through 2009 in the realisation that there is a higher power more powerful than any of us on this earth which we are caretakers of.

Between the third and the tenth of January there is an event being held in Leicester UK to create Love, Respect, and a Positive Attitude amongst the young and old. Youngsters will be working hard to break the stereotype that surrounds them by doing something positive and show it to the public. How wonderful that is, it is sure to be very interesting and delightful. They would be pleased to hear from anyone who is willing to be helpful at this event and you will find details on this link, please get involved.
http://comcats.org.uk/current-events-209-page0-R-E-S-P-E-C-T.php

Now that the revelries of New Years Eve are over (although in Scotland it is celebrated and carried on for several days) also as I remember in the North of England with the traditional custom of first footing observed which is carried out by the first dark haired, dark complexioned person to set foot in the house after midnight bringing with them a piece of coal to bring good luck. The door of hospitality is then open to all good neighbours and friends who want to join in the celebration. The month of January is named after the God Janus the God of the doorway originating in Roman mythology. May we all walk through the open door to a new year in harmony and peace together with love and without prejudice, and give thanks for the breath of life our Divine Creator gave us. If the shadows appear to be growing darker it is because the light that casts them is getting brighter…

We Wish You All a Happy New Year 2009

Christmas 2008

This year we are very aware of the global recession, and the credit crunch will be hitting a lot of people very hard indeed, it is impossible to read a newspaper and not see the bad things happening in the world and on our planet, so it may seem difficult for some to see how they can have a happy Christmas, certainly getting into debt is not the answer. Christmas has never been the time for excess of any kind although in my opinion over the years it has become an emotional commercial blackmail to spend, spend, spend, for me it is a spiritual time to remember light coming into the world when Jesus was born, a time for teaching children the meaning of Christmas and bringing joy to others. We all want to give our children, friends and the people around us the best gifts possible and in doing so we should remember that all that glitters is not gold.

The answer to having a happy Christmas is a simple one happiness comes from within and is infectious. Have a simple Christmas filled with joy, and share the true meaning with everyone giving the gifts we can all afford. Celebrate the tradition by giving presents that cost nothing and be thankful for what ever food is on the table. Give time to someone less fortunate, decorate the house with craft made streamers and foliage from the garden and hedgerows, use creative ideas with the things that are at hand around us, a fancy menu does not always have the ingredients that are healthy for us and an inexpensive nutritious meal can be presented decoratively and enjoyed just as much, involve children in helping to prepare easy made food, or candies as presents, use kitchen foil and crepe paper as wrapping paper, and begin early collecting coloured silver sweet wrappers to make tree decorations, work together as a team, pool everyone’s ideas in a list and the children will love joining in.

We have all experienced Christmas times in the past when they have been abundant and merry, and other Christmas times that have been frugal and maybe sad. This year in this world climate of economy the best gift of all is to be positive in our faith forgetting ourselves and giving attention to the spiritual meaning, giving to our children and others what is useful and sensibly what they need, and not what they think they should materially have. Ignore the temptation of media advertising and the one-upmanship of who received the best presents, or have the best Christmas lights and enjoy what is right now on Christmas day. Love is the most important message of Christmas and that is what Christmas reminds us we should be doing every day. Remember if you live alone there is no need to be lonely, prepare now and go out, search in your local library, there are people and organisations that will be glad of your company. There is some useful information in my 2007 Christmas open letter in Archives on my article page and some useful links here for ideas.

Have a wonderful Christmas may everyone have blessings of love, Peace, and Joy.

OPEN LETTER
November 2008

Kindness and Remembering

November may seem a dark and dismal month to look forward to but only if we believe it to be so, in spite of the chilling winds and rain the next few weeks have several things of interest, and we can forget for a while the global recession by making the most of what doesn’t cost anything, and by taking advantage of opportunities that in the past we may not have noticed, or thought we didn’t have time for. Taking a stroll to see the changing colours of autumn before winter sets in, even a stroll in the gentle rain can make grey skies beautiful. Walk a dog and see how they enjoy it so why not splash in a few puddles ourselves. Toasting muffins over an open fire used to be a favourite of mine and taking advantage of nights in maybe getting the family to play some board games like monopoly together, or reading the favourite book we thought we never had time for earlier.

November 13th is world kindness day, a time to remember others less fortunate and I am sure everyone will find some useful links on my website to give ideas for making someone else’s life more enjoyable, forget any bad news in the media, live moment to moment with a smile and instead of worrying just deal with any necessary plans, or difficulties as they occur, to relax and smile is infectious is it not, making us feel good and everyone else as well. November 5th is bonfire night, the time we remember when Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the houses of Parliament. Dummy Guys are made by children and carted around as they beg for a penny for the guy; fireworks are bought for the celebration, and there are lots of firework demonstrations in most areas of the UK, the Guy is eventually put on top of the bonfire to be burnt, and a potato roasted in the fire always tastes special, I do appeal to all children and their parents to be extra careful at this time. This is a good link to find out more.
www.theholidayspot.com/guy_fawkes_day/history.htm

November 9th is Remembrance Day for those who died in the first and second world wars an important event in our calendar, so many of our veterans are aging now and they certainly deserve recognition as 10,000 of them pay homage in London on that day. There will be two minutes silence at 11am in remembrance of those who died. On the 27th of November it is Thanks Giving Day for Americans celebrating the harvest when they get together with their families and I wish them a very happy time. There is also a Thanks Giving celebration in Plymouth Devon UK celebrating when the Pilgrim Fathers set sail in 1620 for a new life in America.  www.thanksgivingplymouth.info

There are many celebrations going on in London for thanks giving, and towards the end of November the Christmas lights will be switched on, they are well worth seeing and add a cheerful note to shopping.

Please do not forget that November 14th is the day for children in need. There will be a televised programme on the BBC for further details please see this link   www.bbc.co.uk/pudsey/

It would also be a good idea to remember to prepare for carers rights day the beginning of December, it is never too early to decide to do something and perhaps arrange your own event, please see this link   www.carersuk.org/Newsandcampaigns/CarersRightsDay

I wish you all a very happy, blessed and memorable month of November

NOVEMBER’S MESSAGE

Remember November as the days slip unwillingly
Into winters cold embrace,
Stroll the avenues of nature breathing in the last
Of autumn’s grace,
Bracing winds blow scudding clouds away though
The sky is grey,
While heavy rainfall brings the earthy scent of
Fallen leaves decay,
Storms though troubled in their chaos a harsh
Winter they defy,
Give way to cold submission knowing, to live
First all must die,
Persephone raises her wan face in the dark of
Hades night,
And sings a song of faithful love to hasten
November’s flight,
Build a fire to warm the heart take pleasure in
This month’s gifts,
November reminds us of changing seasons on
Life’s path our spirit uplifts.

October 2008

October 2008

October is here and the beautiful colours of the season surround us, it is a perfect time to enjoy the changing countryside and appreciate Mother Nature in her autumn glory, and there is certainly plenty to do to keep us occupied and entertained. We can still take advantage of the last few longer daylight hours before the clocks go back on the 25th 26th of October and British summer time ends. This is a cheerful month of celebrations, and interests and to begin with I would like to tell you about the coming Pearly Kings and Queens harvest festival, and in case you do not know that much about them I think you will be surprised to learn more about the true Londoners born within the sound of Bow Bells. The real Cockneys with their fabulous sense of humour, the Pearly Kings and Queens and the wonderful charitable work they do.

Their history dates as far back as the 11th century originating from poor street traders who became known as costermongers, they progressed from barrows, to stalls, to the markets we have today, although their life was hard their sense of humour, strength of character and kindness to each other in times of trouble has led them to do great charitable work for all of us giving up their time and raising funds running into millions. The Pearlies have strong and honourable traditions; they developed a unique style and present themselves in beautiful pearl adorned costume. This first began when because they were poor and their clothes were so battered and worn they began to sew lines of pearl buttons on them to brighten them up, until a young urchin boy in 1889 by the name of Henry Croft who was a road sweeper and rat catcher learned to sew, he collected so many pearl buttons he completely covered his clothes with them incorporating many designs and symbols one of which was all for charity. This was amazing considering there can be as many as 30,000 buttons each sewn on individually, and the costume weighs about 30 kilograms or more when finished. He joined the Costers and became a life long friend helping them in their charitable work.

Their talented showmanship, kindness, Cockney wit and humour is always very popular. Each borough of London elected their Coster king, and the kings and Queens brought their children up to inherit their titles. There are many occasions and festivities where anyone can go to meet the Pearly Kings and Queens as you will see in the given links for the month of October, such as the Pearly Kings and Queen’s harvest festival, and there are more links if you follow them, please donate generously you will find they are modest about the good work they do among which of many is helping disabled children. You can read much more about their history as I have given only a few short details here.

October 11th is the Muslim Eid ul-Fitre festival the end of the month of Ramadan when there will be much festivity in Trafalgar Square.   www.london.gov.uk/mayor/eid/

October 19th is the celebration of Diwali in Trafalgar Square. The festival of lights celebrates the triumph of good over evil, Light over dark and a new beginning.   www.diwaliinlondon.com/

October 31st is Halloween or ( Samhain ) which dates back to the Celts and is celebrated with lots of spooky connotations, a time when witchy costumes are worn and children go trick or treating. May everyone celebrate and enjoy sensibly and consider the sick and elderly and play no nasty tricks. The celebration is a matter of preference among Christians and some do not take part. It is considered a special time for Pagans as it is the Pagans new year, it is a time to remember loved ones who have passed on, and be thankful for the year that has past and for the new year to come. It is believed that the veil between the physical and the spiritual is thin for those who have passed. Bonfires are lit to honour them, and gifts given to the gods to thank them.  www.eparenting.co.uk/halloween/celebratinghalloween.shtml   www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/customs/Halloween.html

Here are special links for carers who may be interested October 28th 29th 30th is UK Dementia Congress. This is excellent if you can get there, However as we all know there are many carers who would like to be there but will be unable because of lack of help, and facilities for them to do so. October 1st is older people’s day, and Full of Life Events. September is named after the Latin word Septem meaning 7 and is the month of the harvest moon, a time of hard work harvesting the fruits of the land, and giving thanks. The daylight now begins to fade as the night grows longer. The Autumn Equinox is on or around the 21st of September when there is much festivity in celebrating the harvest festival, giving thanks for abundant crops. This is a time when the soil begins to die as winter is soon to follow, a time of balance, counting blessings and bringing balance into our lives. Michaelmas falls on the 29th of September in honour of the Arch Angel Michael who was given his own feast day by Pope Galasius in AD 487. The Christian harvest festival began in 1843 when the reverend Robert Hawker gave a special thanks giving service to parishioners at his church, gifts of fruit, vegetables, and loaves of bread are presented in churches and afterwards distributed to the elderly and poor, with sometimes a feast afterwards. Old traditions still survive such as making corn dollies. Links and a beautiful thanks giving video below….

August 2008

August 2008

In the month of July we have had a few hot sunny days in the UK when the sun has lifted our spirits, even when sometimes there are those who find the heat rather intolerable it tends to slow us down and give us time to relax and muse about things that concern us. The cheerful sunlight helps us to focus. Even though there maybe a lot of things in the news to depress us and one thing or another affects us in some way. To sit quietly and not allow depression to take hold, having done our best, and carrying on doing the best we can, step by step become aware that everything that seems complicated or unsolvable is an illusion, because for better or worse nothing stays the same, there is constant change.

On healingspur website there are many things mentioned to be concerned about. However not always concentrating on the downside of upsetting and debatable issues there are also helpful and uplifting things too. When mixing with a group of pessimists who constantly look on the black side, or with totally hedonistic, materialistic, or apathetic lazy people it is not long before it affects us. We can enjoy ourselves in lots of different ways, everyone to their own interests, none of which should be judged as long as in our minds and hearts the desire for the good of all is the highest priority. We may think when we are preoccupied, enjoying ourselves there are times we forget about others, but if the desire is true and genuine for the good of all it cannot be forgotten entirely because our subconscious mind never forgets and positive outcomes follow, but if mixing with groups who have only a selfish desire the subconscious cannot process negatives and negative outcomes follow.

Thoughts are energy and the more people who gather together world wide with their thoughts focused on the highest priority the good of all it is extremely powerful in bringing about change, there are those who devote their lives to doing this which is comforting in this troubled world, whatever nationality or denomination we are the world and the universe needs more people to focus on the good of all, it works for each individual, and on a vast scale, to concentrate and keep this in mind it becomes a natural part of our lives and others lives too, it is important to find a balance between thoughts, words and actions, sometimes strong words and deeds within reason are necessary.

John 2:15 Bible New World Translation It is good to take heart in the fact that not everything is doom and gloom unless we want it to be, in the midst of adversity we can have peace and joy within ourselves then even walking in the rain can be a pleasure.

July 2008

Everyone hopes that the weather in July will be fine and sunny. It is the time for holidays and certainly the school holidays when many parents will be thinking about various things to do to keep the children occupied, planning places of interest to go to where they can be entertained, or even somewhere where all the family can enjoy something educational, even just staying at home and doing something together, playing games, or making crafts there are lots of things to keep everyone amused without sitting in front of the television, or using the computer. Taking advantage of time spent with the children always improves family life rather than leaving the kids to amuse themselves. Planning in advance if possible is always a good idea, making specific dates on the calendar as to what to do, or where to go and when, and there are good links on the internet where everyone can gain inspiration, and not all the activities are expensive in fact some cost very little if nothing at all.    www.development.tas.gov.au/sportrec/publications/65things.pdf

If you are feeling artistic or it is pouring with rain there are lots of ideas for handicrafts that all can take part in   www.familyfun.go.com/arts-and-crafts/crafts-by-age/specialfeature/kids-crafts-9-12-years/kids-crafts-9-12-years.html

Midsummer’s Eve is on the 4th of July, and is also US Independence day the official birthday of the United States. The month of July was named after Julius Caesar in honour of his reforming the calendar, and July is also the month to remember the Greek Goddess Rhea- (Mother Earth), although she was worshiped in ancient times it would be appropriate to do something for mother earth now at a time when she is in most need of it. Start a conservation club and find out what needs doing and how you can help in your area. June 2008

June 2008

The beautiful month of June has arrived and what ever the weather we should have several days of glorious sunshine, some people will be basking in it and rubbing quantities of sun blocks and creams onto their bodies and face taking care of their skin and hair, or so they think. How ever it is important to check what we are using. Everyone who is interested in safe guarding their health and are keen to avoid ingesting poisons into their system are being careful as to what they eat and drink but it is not enough when you consider that nearly everything you put on your skin is absorbed into your body. The fact is most cosmetics are not properly tested. Only a few are tested adequately for toxicity. When you read the horrifying results that many of these cosmetics cause not only are we risking blindness due to a bacteria that can contaminate mascara, there are dyes used for colouring in cosmetics that can cause dermatitis and skin cancer, and even using talcum powder gives a greater risk of ovarian cancer, also just a few of the disorders that can be caused by taking a bubble bath are kidney infections, genital disorders, and respiratory disorders. The amount of poisonous chemicals that the majority of women are taking into their system is horrendous. There are Government regulations for what we eat and drink, but where are the regulations and labelling of the ingredients in cosmetics. http://www.naturalnews.com/016898.html

Parabens are a group of preservatives that are found in leave on cosmetics and are known to disrupt hormones, and are linked to a higher risk of breast cancer and can also affect male reproductive function. Aluminium in deodorants and lipstick are known to be linked with to breast cancer, it is possible to go on and on describing the danger in cosmetics for there is much scientific and medical evidence. http://www.safecosmetics.org/faqs/

From the beginning of time women have always wanted to enhance their appearance, and have used poisonous substances. The ancient Egyptians used Mercury in their face powder, and in Elizabethan times ladies used arsenic in theirs. If you take care of your health and keep fit watching what you eat and drink is it worth risking your life using these cosmetics? There are things that can be done there are a variety of natural cosmetics at a good health food store, or consult a skin care specialist as some products can be customised for your needs. There are also many safe natural things close at hand you can use and make yourself. The natural properties in fruit and vegetables can be good when applied to skin. There are natural colorants and oils to use, a drop of vinegar or beer is good for the hair, and the white of egg is a good face mask and tightens the pores, learn how to apply what is safe and good for you instead of spending a fortune on what could easily harm you, a very good link to visit for making kitchen cosmetic recipes, and credit where credit is due is on http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/8088/beauty.html

Please remember beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and do try to keep out of the harmful suns rays and enjoy the month of June as there is a lot going on.

The most important event taking place this month is carer’s week from 9th to the 15th of June highlighting the impact caring can have on a carer’s health and well being
www.carersnet.org.uk/events/events.html

Carer’s week is organised by ten leading charities who support the UK’s six million carers.  www.carersweek.org/

There will be a lot of things to take an interest in regarding what is going on for carers and hopefully this will be a top priority for everyone concerned this month. There are of course many other events taking place and lots of wonderful places to visit, may the weather keep fine and everyone enjoy.

OPEN LETTER
May 2008

This month of May is an important time to draw attention to how our seasons are changing and for the need to work to protect our crops, climate, and the conservation of all things on our planet. Already the hawthorn has blossomed in April in the UK, and as yet we still do not know the effect that genetically modified crops, or the changing climate has on our wild life or on us. Over the centuries our lives have changed dramatically and it is up to us to protect and preserve our beautiful planet Earth. There is a difference between advancing the gifts of nature and meddling with them. “I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority.” Elwyn Brookes White

This month from May 18th to June 17th is national smile month in the UK and USA. The merry month of May is here to be enjoyed with much festivity and folklore traditions that have been with us for hundreds of years, some of which may seem strange, and at certain times in history have been considered to be heathen. However these traditions have survived and continue in villages all over the country in the UK.

The month of May is named after the Roman and Greek Goddess Maia the Goddess of spring and is honoured on the 1st of May in the UK when the Maypole Dance is performed, and generally the crowning of the May Queen. The Maypole dance is a fertility rite symbolised by the pole. The 1st of May is the celebration of Beltane along with Samhain Beltane is one of the two most important rites for Pagans, at Beltane a fire is lit for the purposes of purification, and the May King belted with flowers, it is very interesting to read about in this article link http://www.widdershins.org/vol3iss1/b9704.htm There is along with the dancing the characters of Jack in the Green, and the Hobby Horse- or Obby Oss. Jack in the Green distinguishable as the man covered in fresh green foliage from head to toe, and Hobby Horse- Obby Oss the man dressed with a horse shaped head and curtained body. The Morris dancers can also be seen dressed in smocks decorated with ribbons and bells. The origin of Morris dancing has now been lost in the mists of time. The Puritans tore down the Maypoles and banned the dancing and celebrations but they began again after the restoration of Charles the second and have survived to this day.

There are other celebrations taking place through out the month of May including the placing of garlands of flowers in boats to bless the fishing season, and the old custom of cheese rolling, the one who catches it is allowed to keep it. In Wishford Wiltshire the villagers collect large branches of oak from the forest and on returning brandish them chanting “Grovely, Govely and all Grovely” and carry a banner on which are the words Grovely, Grovely and all Grovely, Unity is Strength, afterwards there is a procession and fete, this is to celebrate their right granted in 1603 to collect wood from the Grovely forest. For many more of these folklore traditions and the dates they take place this month- click http://www.historic-uk.com/CultureUK/FolkloreYear-May.htm

Welcome Maia Maestas to thee we give our praise,
You cause the growing buds to flower and bring the
Warmth of sunny days,
Glorious Earth Goddess you spread you cloak of shades
Of green,
O’er fields, trees and forests your majesty is seen,
Powerful your gracious hand brings forth the wealth
Of nature’s spring,
In the merry month of May with joy we dance and sing.

OPEN LETTER
April 2008

Here is a salute to 109 year old Harry Patch who is the UK’s oldest surviving veteran who fought in the trenches in world war one, he has many memories of the seasons that he has seen come and go. Mr Patch who now lives in a care home was a plumber by trade before he was called up to see action in the battle of Passchendaele as a Lewis gunner serving with the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. He has been honoured in a poem written by the poet Laureate Andrew Motion which was performed at the Bishop’s Palace Wells UK.   BBC News

And please do not forget Anzac day 25th of April  News Anzac Day 25th April

April the 23rd is Saint George’s day and there are many events taking place in celebration of it, but through the misguided intentions of some who are obsessed with political correctness the White flag with the Red Cross on it which we have been rightfully proud to fly for centuries could possibly be banned, I hope not for it reminds me of- quote “Cry God for Harry, England, And Saint George” William Shakespeare (Henry V) do they want to ban Shakespeare too. There are many events taking place on the day to celebrate all things English and I wish everyone a very happy Saint Georges day and may the flag always continue to fly.   St Georges Day Events

The month of April is here bringing the showers that bring forth the flowers and new growth. Nature’s busy breeding season for the birds and animals has arrived, and everyone begins to feel anticipation of spring delights, fresh greenery and the appearance of wild primroses and bluebells in the woods. April is probably named after the Goddess Aphrilis which originally comes from the name Aphrodite the Greek Goddess of love. In ancient Rome there was a feast called the Parilia and Romulus the legendary founder of Rome was said to take part in this. The 21st of April was later made a public holiday to celebrate the founding of Rome with feasting, dancing and merrymaking by all the people. If you are interested in folklore this is an interesting link.   Mysical Time

In case you missed the chance of an Easter break and are looking for an idea of where to go, although Easter would indeed have been a special time it is always the right time for a pilgrimage to Lourdes to visit the holy shrine at Massabielle, or any of the other amazing holy shrines in Europe, Banneux, Fatima, Knock, or maybe visit Assissi, Rome, or other beautiful places mentioned in the link below, and yes I do believe in miracles we just do not notice the small ones that happen every day. I hope you enjoy my April links.   Lourdes Pilgrim

March 2008
Happy Easter Message

March is a wonderful month with lots to look forward to, spring is in the air, Easter is round the corner, and there are lots of things to do. Planning and preparing the garden for summer, visiting the garden centres, and a great time to watch out for the birds arriving in the UK. Look out and see if you can spot the first cuckoo, and a few other birds such as the chiff chaff, wheatear, sandmartin, swallow and willow warbler. Nature has lots of surprises in March and one of the amazing things to see if you happen to be taking a stroll in the countryside is the crazy mad March hare. Although it looks like a rabbit the hare is bigger than a rabbit with bigger ears and a darker tail. It is the fastest mammal in the UK at speeds of up to 45 miles per hour, and rather than burrowing like a rabbit, it builds nests, and it is very amusing to see during this time of their courtship. Their behaviour is remarkable as they give a comedy boxing match performance punching each other like two raving mad things; they circle each other playing catch as catch can, then stop to face each other and have a good old punch out, the female doing most of the punching. Sadly although the hunting sport of hare coursing has been banned, the hare population is still decreasing in some parts of the country.

It is never difficult to find things to keep us occupied in the spring, apart from spring cleaning, there are lots of festivals, fairs and events going on to visit in all parts of the UK, enquire at your local library, and tourist office for information. Everyone’s mood is lifted when the sun comes out. Children will be looking forward to Easter, and all the celebrations that Easter involves including the decorating and painting of Easter eggs, or making the chocolate variety, playing games like running egg races, or rolling eggs down a hill, or have a competition for which person can make the best Easter bonnet.

Easter is said to be named after Ostare the dawn Goddess of fertility, and Pagans will be celebrating the spring Equinox at this time of year, it is a time of thanks and fertility for them, the planting of seeds for a good harvest, not only for crops, but for the good resolutions made now to bear good fruit in the future. Some Christians are in doubt of celebrating Easter, However many do, the most important thing is what they focus upon which is the death of Jesus and why he died, a time of sadness for his suffering and the joyous expectation of his resurrection, what ever plans you have for Easter may it be a happy one.

Valentines Day
OPEN LETTER
FEBRUARY 2008

There are so many tragic things going on in our world today it is all too easy to believe that all is doom and gloom, this is not so for there are a lot of people in the world who care and who are doing their best to act, find answers, and give their time and prayers every day. We are now in the second month 2008 and although we cannot ignore the serious side of life it is important to remember that we should also relax and enjoy life for it is important for our health to do so. Valentine day arrives on February 14th and it has been celebrated as far back as Roman times, it is a wonderful day to think of those we love. In Roman times it was celebrated in honour of the Goddess Juno the queen of Roman Gods and Goddesses and the patron Goddess of women and marriage. The custom of young people then was to put all their names on a piece of folded paper, then each would pick one and become partners with the chosen named partner for the duration of the festival of Lupercalia which commenced on February 15th and sometimes they would fall in love which would then lead to marriage. At the time the Emperor Claudius who was named Claudius the cruel was engaged in a lot of unpopular, nasty and bloody campaigns, he also outlawed all marriages and engagements in Rome because he believed only single men made good soldiers as they had no family to consider.

Saint Valentine who was a priest at the time, and also Saint Marius helped people and they secretly conducted marriages for them. Valentine was caught and it is said he was then imprisoned. Being loved by children they threw notes and flowers through the bars of his cell for him. The Emperor Claudius was also angered by Valentines attempts to convert him to Christianity and so had him savagely beaten to death. Valentine became a martyr around the year 270 AD. I n 498 AD Pope Galasius declared February 14th as Saint Valentine’s Day to honour Valentine and to end the Pagan celebration. During the middle ages the belief was held that birds began to look for their mate from February 14th, and Saint Valentine soon became the patron saint of lovers. The festival became rapidly popular, and today is considered not only a day to celebrate the love that lovers have for each other, but a day to celebrate love for parents, family, siblings, friends and everyone. Some people do not agree that there should be one day on which to celebrate and show their love for each other as it is something which we all should do every day, this is true. However it does remind those who have forgotten to do so. It is everyone’s choice whether to celebrate it or not. There is much commercialism attached to many of our special festival days and it is wise to do and accept everything in moderation particularly where widespread commercialism is concerned. However I would like to wish you all a very happy Valentines Day and the love felt and shown on this day perpetuate your every day. I f you would like to know more about Saint Valentines day there is a lot of amazing information on these links.

New Year New Begining
JANUARY OPEN LETTER 1.1.08

Here we are in 2008 now after all the celebrations of new years eve are over everyone will be wondering what 2008 will bring us, with all that is going on in the world when we each read our newspaper every day, wondering will it be good news or bad and how it will effect us it is good to remember we got through last year and thankfully have a blank new page in our diary, how we fill it for the rest of the year is up to us, whatever is happening in the world or to us personally we can now choose to make the most of it and make it the best yet. Some people will make New Year resolutions and break them, others will persevere and make an effort to keep them and succeed, who ever we may be, what ever our status, or education the choice is ours for what ever circumstances we are in pleasant or difficult it is what we decide and do about them that matters, we are all individuals and there is no point in worrying about what someone else is going to do, or what political decisions are going to be made, or what might happen, it is what we do personally that counts. Everyone has their own agenda, it would be wonderful if everyone had good intentions in life but we know that there are those who do not, our choice is then to stick to the good choices we make we cannot blame anyone else for our own bad decisions. Often there are situations that occur that are beyond our control when that happens it is what we decide and how we react that determines how we succeed and overcome them, we then draw to us the strength needed. This New Year gives us a chance to make it better than the last, in good or bad times to make ours and other peoples lives better. What if we all decided to give more? Sadly not everyone will, but if most of us did, wouldn’t that have a great and positive effect on everyone and everything around us? Giving does not mean being a martyr or doormat, it is still possible to give and stand up for what is right, whatever we give materially or of ourselves is important, though what is material doesn’t last, what we give of ourselves always does.

Each year that passes leads us through different stages and phases of our life, as we grow older looking back I am sure we all remember our many different New Years Eves we have spent over the years, some when we were happy, and others when we were sad, and we are still here thankfully celebrating the new for the old has gone, It is a great time to celebrate and think over what we have learned during the past twelve months, Plan and look forward remembering that maybe some plans and resolutions may not always be meant to work out, so enjoy every moment positively, accept each moment as a gift, thinking of things we can do to improve ourselves, which in turn improves the lives of others too, dwelling on any pain increases it, relax and enjoy our favourite things as much as possible, smile instead of frown, smiles and joy are contagious and we all know that wonderful feeling when everyone holds hands together to sing Auld Langs Syne at the stroke of midnight and sincerely wishes everyone all good things, we are all of one mind then, and it is up to us to make it last, and make the good feelings and happiness of the season last, we all need to take time to relax, and celebrate sometimes not just at Christmas and bank holidays, it’s healthy and its good for us, it’s no fun getting back into a routine when we don’t feel like it, though if we give this new year a chance dreams can come true, old wounds can be healed, strength given in times of need or loss, not everyone will have perhaps been able to enjoy the season as much as others and we should remember that too, by the end of this month may we all have progressed forward positively, constructively and happily into 2008,.

I WOULD LIKE TO WISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS
OPEN LETTER DECEMBER 1.12.07

christmas picture

It is strange to think that birthdays originated from Paganism and the celebration to the God Mithras who is the sun God worshiped in ancient times, this became more popular in the west when the God Mithras was worshiped by the Romans. The exact date of the birth of Jesus is not known but it was around 350 when it was first decided to choose a date for his birthday, it is recognised now to be the 25th of December and many of the traditions and symbols of Christmas are of Pagan origin, many countries celebrate Christmas with similar traditions and symbols sometimes practiced a little differently but with the same meaning, such as the custom of giving gifts which the Romans also did at the time of their celebration of Saturnalia, Santa Claus or Father Christmas was first recognised in the 15th century, and the Christmas tree was first brought to England by Prince Albert during the reign of Queen Victoria.

The birth of Jesus is a wonderful time, his coming into the world was, and is a time of great joy, a time to remember who he is, and why he was born into the world, and the meaning of his life, to celebrate this with thanks and appreciation, with love, and generosity, celebrating it with a joy that will make him happy, and without any excesses that would displease him, remembering the loving family he was born into, and remembering our own. We all know that it is easy these days because of the increasing commercialism of Christmas to go to excess, but is this what Jesus would want for us to over eat, drink, or get into debt for gifts we cannot afford?.

During the early 1940s there were no fairy lights, no tinsel, and very few decorations for a lot of people, it was regarded as a time for families to get together and make their own decorations, collecting silver and coloured paper, pretty pictures, and candies to decorate the tree, coloured and crepe papers to make paper chains, and there can be much pleasure in still doing that today, making a personal gift for someone is more appreciated than buying something they may never need or use. I n many homes people still celebrate Christmas the old fashioned way, in moderation putting the warmth of family around them on Christmas Eve with everyone helping to prepare things for the next days celebrations, maybe roasting chestnuts by an open fire, relaxing with a glass of mulled wine, or egg nog and getting together round the manger to sing carols in an ambience of anticipation, love and laughter, filling one of dads socks with little surprises rather than a shop bought stocking or sack to place at the end of the children’s beds as they sleep.

There is much more commercialism now and it is easy to get caught up in the frenzy of Christmas shopping, in earlier days there was less availability, less choice and less worry that someone may get what they thought was a better present than someone else. Christmas is a time of love and generosity and there are those who can afford to give more than others, however there are ways to be generous that costs nothing, like offering to help and volunteer where it is needed, or inviting someone who is elderly or alone to share Christmas dinner with you, helping or walking a dog at your local animal shelter, or taking part in being helpful with Christmas preparations at your church, If it is possible to be able to afford something more, think about unusual and helpful gifts, if you are taking your children to a pantomime book an extra seat and take another child with you who would otherwise not be able to have the opportunity to go. There are many ideas to choose from, adopt an animal at the Zoo, or adopt an endangered species abroad, but please do not give animals as presents without the intention that the person you give the animal too is capable of caring for it for life. If you do find that you are unavoidably lonely through whatever circumstances remember there are others who will be feeling lonely too, although you maybe by yourself you are not alone, prepare now to endeavour to join in the festivities where and as much you can, and if that is not possible pamper or treat yourself for you are important and loved, give praise to Jesus for he was born into this world and showed us that. However you decide to celebrate Christmas this year please give generously and I wish you all the very best of Christmas cheer.

If you have found any helpful information, or enjoyed browsing this website and want to give a Christmas present to us and the thousands of people who do visit us here, all of whom will be grateful. Please, young or old, with or without PhDs give a moment of your time to write a contribution, letter or comment on any subject mentioned on my contact me page and send it to me, it will cost you nothing and be much appreciated

Caring At Christmas 1 November 2007

About a year or so ago I decided to volunteer to work two hours twice a week at a shelter for the homeless which I carried on doing for a period of several months during which time I learned many things about the unfortunate people who end up in the homeless situation, it was an eye opener to understanding the many difficulties and different circumstances that lead people of all ages and from all walks of life to a life on the streets, among those that I met who were in dire need of help, both young and old were those with good education, some qualified with degrees, others from family break ups, loss of home and family through divorce, debt not of their making, and young confused people fending for themselves after leaving home. There are many reasons and many heartbreaking true stories behind their decline sometimes into drugs, alcohol, criminal activities, prostitution, and sleeping on the streets.

When I arrived as a helper I was feeling a bit nervous as to what to expect, I soon found there was no need to be nervous of anything, the duties ranged from working in the kitchen, serving meals, clearing tables, bed making etc, all volunteers lend a hand in whatever needs to be done, I was made welcome by everyone and shown where everything was kept and what to do, I was very pleased to meet other wonderful volunteers both professional and none professional, and young students happy to give their time between studying and work, we all worked as a team and made our homeless guests comfortable, talking to them and giving them as much needed information and help as we could. I spoke to many of the homeless who I found were extremely grateful and helpful themselves, keeping tidy and helpful whilst there, a few others who had spent years in this life style may have become addicted to it but in spite of seeming hopelessness still inclined to help each other.

I saw a man difficult to age possibly nearing eighty years old hardly able to move, covered in urine, cleaned, changed, put to bed, and cared for by other homeless strangers. No alcohol, or drugs are allowed, and no fights were allowed or occurred whist I was there as careful eyes are kept on everything by officials and volunteers, neither did I or any volunteers, some who had worked there for many years contract any diseases. This month thoughts will be turning to preparations for Christmas celebrations, there is little for the homeless to celebrate. There are centres for the homeless open at Christmas needing volunteers even just a couple of hours is a help, if anyone can spare those hours for what ever period of the year everyone will be very grateful, check out your local advice centre for details of where they are in need of help in your area. Please do not judge. Buy the Big Issue, and give a priceless gift this year, your time.

BAD ADDITIVES - 1 October 2007

Recently it was published in the press how bad additives in our food are detrimental to our children’s health and behaviour, because the FSA has decided that recent dramatic findings do not justify a complete ban on additives many parents will not be sure wether the advice should apply to their child, while those who try to avoid additives will find it impossible without an official ban, it is now known that additives cause hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder, over the past thirty years parents have been asking for help concerning the effects of additives on their children and were ignored, and now their concerns have been confirmed. The FSA has decided to pass on the responsibility to the EU and the European Food Safety Authority, and the EFSA has promised a safety review but it could be many years before EU states agree a common policy. Many people are worried about the way some people behave today, the increase in crime among the young, even the not so young the watchdogs chief scientist Andrew Page said “ there are many factors associated with hyper active behaviour in children, These are thought to include genetic factors, being born prematurely, environment, and upbringing” I t is now being considered for legal action to be taken against the government’s food watchdog for refusing to support a ban on harmful additives but after taking legal advice about supporting a ban they say manufacturers should decide for themselves on wether to remove additives, this is now challenged by health crusaders. The children’s Food Campaign, representing 170 health and consumer bodies, according to the European commission a country can suspend the use of additives where there is evidence of harm, some supermarkets are now taking action to ban additives, see this months latest news.

There are indeed many factors to consider why many in society behave the way they do, and can we always know the future effects of additives, or genetically modified foods, or even how far scientists will go with regard to hybrid animal embryos, or the effects of what new drugs there will be in the future, what ever we take into our systems can possibly affect us physically and neurologicaly in a harmful way if there is not caution, and rapid action when necessary. We also have to consider the responsibility we have in the way we bring up our children and in what environment. Looking back over the past three generations I am sure parents bringing up children after world war two ended did not want them to do without or suffer and go through the things they went through during those terrible years, when as gradually things improved and everything became more available, food, clothes, toys etc all were readily available and given, perhaps more than should have been to compensate for the bad times creating a pattern for the next generation, and the generation after that, even rules became more relaxed, should any parent or anyone be blamed for perhaps loving too much by possibly spoiling their children unknowingly, everyone did what they thought was right at the time. Through relaxed discipline and the lack of teaching understanding of values, standards and principles become eroded, progress is caring about physical and emotional well being, what we put into our bodies and what values we put into our minds, what belief system we teach about right and wrong and how we should respect people and the very nature of our planet, and all things in it, is it not then we will have better leaders, less greed and more concern for our elderly and our children, shouldn’t we act speedily about all these things, rather than wait and bolt the door after the horse has flown.

BYGONE DAYS ON FOOD SURPLUS - 1 September 2007

Do you remember the long gone days of the corner shop? When we could ask and get the exact quantity we asked for, tea and sugar wrapped in a square piece of paper twisted into a cornet shape? Was it realy that unhygienic, I do not remember there being the cancers and super bugs we have today, neither were there the layers of packaging that end up in our bins, mounds of rubbish causing great concern to councils and therefore us, and also littering our planet and adding to its destruction. Landfill sites are now full to the brim and little land left to find more space to put rubbish in. It was the practice of these small corner shop owners to give service with a smile and if necessary to deliver to our door, it was a pleasure to shop for groceries and even have a friendly chat with neighbours we met there, unlike the tense hustle and bustle of supermarket shopping.

Neither was there the disgraceful waste of food we have now due to buy one get one free BOGOFS, which many of us are tempted to buy and don’t need that usually end up in the bin too while many in the world are starving, do we realy need these giants taking over land forcing out small business owners and tempting us and our children with food and goods we do not need, doesn’t this lead to greed and gluttony? If there are any super intelligent aliens out there in the universe and beyond no wonder they don’t want to know us, I am sure they respect intelligence and progress that is far more advanced than some of our misguided ideas of a progressive society and civilization, so what if we don’t get as much choice, some convenience foods could still be available, and even with less choice we do not remember ever going hungry because of it, there were less if any additives in the food we ate to keep it fresh, more vegetables were home grown and not contaminated with pesticides, what was wrong with the days of garden allotments that are now long gone, the vegetables grown there were fresh and the only pesticides available years ago was very often just soapy water.

Remember the pig bins that were supplied where people could dispose of their left over food and slops that were then collected and sent to feed the pigs, nothing was wasted, progress is a fine thing if it is of benefit to ourselves and our children, however it is a pity more of us do not question more often to whose benefit it is, ours or the giants who make billions. Do we realy need so many magazines, a lot we do not asked for stuffed into newspapers all the more to litter our earth with, including the circulars pushed through our doors.

Everyone is becoming more aware of our carbon footprint and willing to do their best, and all that I have said need not be depressing if we not only stop complaining and questioning how the pollution of our earth and ourselves came about and still continues, the fact is none of us should allow apathy to prevent us from doing something positive about it however small, for even a small thing makes a difference, it is true that evil prevails while good men do nothing.

JUNK MAIL - 1 August 2007

Everyone I know is more than tired of the junk that we receive in the mail and I would like to draw attention to the increasing number of elderly people who are being scammed by charlatans, fraudsters, and the lotteries promising these people that they have been chosen to win thousands of pounds, warnings about this have been published in the press and on television news programmes, but there are too many vulnerable elderly people and those with perhaps a compulsive disorder who are still being taken advantage of, we have heard of people being duped out of thousands of pounds and sometimes their life savings, this is not a small problem, and I personally know one elderly person with dementia who apart from losing their money to these vultures has collected, horded, and hidden huge bags of junk mail because of their obsession with it, they have been constantly harassed to send money to fake psychics, mediums, astrologers, witches, lotteries, etc. I appeal to everyone to destroy any mail they receive from these cruel avaricious confidence tricksters, sadly there are those with dementia or a compulsive disorder who are addicted to the evil untrue promises of these greedy charlatans and tricksters who rob vulnerable people of their hard earned money. Here in the UK there is the Mail Preference Service anyone can contact in order to reduce this junk mail, ( link below ) However although this reduces it this does not totally solve the problem because some junk mail is sent from countries abroad where their governments laws on the sending of junk mail differs from ours in the UK, it is a scandal that more is not done to stop it everywhere in the world.

Please remember if you give any details about yourself to these abusers not only will you lose money you have sent them and for which you receive nothing, they will then sell your details on to other abusers using scam techniques, therefore making even more money out of you who they openly call mugs, you are then put on a mugs list. I also warn anyone with Power of Attorney that it is against the law here in UK to open or tamper with any junk mail that is addressed to the person you are caring for making it extremely difficult for both. Considering how many trees we lose to the detriment of our planet in order to print this vile stuff, and the amount of rubbish that is caused by it, and the misery it causes in vulnerable peoples lives, it is time it was taken seriously in all countries, we may not be able to prevent people being charlatans, fraudsters and confidence tricksters, but it should be possible to stop them issuing their despicable literature through the post, if you need help or advice there are two links you may find helpful, also for telephone nuisance calls.

YOUNG PEOPLE - 1 July 2007

YOUNG PEOPLE
This is my experience about what I have found to be true about young people, particularly teenagers. When all my own four children left the nest to get married and after being a lone parent for quite some time I was suddenly alone in an empty house that no longer felt like a home, so I decided to put the empty space to some use as approved lodgings for who some people called problem teenagers, I must admit I was feeling nervous, but I soon realised when getting to know them and learning about their backgrounds and circumstances that the young people who came to stay with me were certainly not problem teenagers but teenagers with problems, and what young person does not have those, unfortunately some more than others. I had already gone through times with my own children when they had given me some sleepless nights, and every parent will know what I mean by that, now I do believe that these days there is definitely more pressure on young people than years ago, in spite of the many gadgets some have to keep them amused, the freer society we live in today has not in lots of ways helped them to have the incentive and motivation to apply themselves in building their future, because of the bad things that we read in the newspapers it can be too easy to judge that all are the same when the majority are good.

I felt I had to bring this to notice briefly without going into detail as a reminder that young people need and should be encouraged, and given every opportunity to have their say and be listened to, they are the future of the human race and our planet, a frequent comment from many of the teenagers I spoke to was that they would have appreciated more discipline when they were younger, and others that they had too much to the point of terrible abuse, it is so important to find a balance in family, home, and education, I f you are a young person reading this and have any helpful suggestions or changes you would like to see in your area or elsewhere, in any country that would improve the lives of many of you please use my message board, and if you are an older person and have room in your heart and home plus the patience to help any anger and frustration these young people have to be channelled in a constructive way even if there are occasional disappointments because it is not easy, you will find the rewards are great.
