A Great Star
By Pamela V Hall At the risk of giving my age away I thought it was worth it to cheer everyone up, it has certainly never prevented one of my favourite great stars from doing so and he is still working today at the age of ? well!!!! I remember him when cinema theatres were a lot different to what they are like today. In the days before television there were often long queues to get in and we didn't mind waiting in the pouring rain to see our favourite films, usually a two feature, Buskers were often there to keep us amused till we reached the entrance to the cinema which had a thick red carpet and a long gallery of stars to look at to pass the time until we were ushered to our plush red velvet seats, the walls were ornately gilded and to pass the time before the film began it was magical to see the magnificent organ rise up out of the floor and be entertained with music before the film began, I had many favourites and never went home without a copy of the Picturegoer. The star who has kept me and so many smiling then has never faded, in 1939 he and Deanna Durbin received special Oscars, and by the 1940's he was a top box office star,. Married eight times, once to Ava Gardner, he said quote "I am the only man in the world whose marriage license reads, to whom it may concern" he is now 88 years old and about to appear this Christmas as buttons in the pantomime Cinderella, needless to say I will be there. If you haven't guessed Mickey Rooney once seen is never forgotten. If you want to laugh do watch this video it is hilarious.
