My Army Experience

I must say how important it is to remember our veterans not only of world war two but our many brave heroes and heroines who have served in the Falklands, and those in Iraq and Afganistan. All those who are serving for the good and freedom of All the people on our planet and have come back home disabled, to them our gratitude and love.

I was born in 1924 and I have seen many changes over the years, it has been difficult for me to know that now at eighty two years of age I have the first stages of dementia, however I am still able to tell my story, and both my wife Pamela and I are both optimistic that as time passes with the right help and treatment my condition will not deteriorate, I am still reasonable active for my age and can potter about in the garden, go shopping, and do the dishes.

I attend a day center three times a week, and when home I occasionaly take the dog for a walk, and when not seeing members of the family my wife and I go out to lunch together and she will choose some places to visit. I am a member of The Normandy Veterans Association and I take great pleasure in our monthly meetings, over the years I have kept some memorabelia from the past and spend happy and sad hours remembering past times.

Before I retired after working my way up in an international company I was a manager of administratration of architects and surveyers for almost fifty years, and I often think of my comrades that I spent most of world war two with when I served with the 43rd recconaissance regiment, I was one of the lucky ones. My most prominent memory among many others was my narrow escape when the transport ship carrying us to Normandy was mined. We were all asleep at the time when our ship hit a mine about three miles from the beaches, I was thrown out of my hammock into the air and then fell back into it, luckily enough I jumped overboard through a hole in the side of the ship and swam until I was picked up. We lost many good friends in A squadron in that incident. There were more men lost in that incident than in any other one incident during the whole of the war. I spend a lot of time in my arm chair mulling over old memories. If it was'nt for mirrors I'm still twenty one.
